Abstract:
summary, optical imaging (OIS and NIRS) has already proven itself as a valuable research tool for mapping human cortices and defining neurovascular physiology (table 1). The above OIS studies also demonstrate the potential as a clinical neurosurgical mapping device15. Similarly, NIRS has proven itself as a non invasive tool for the assessment of cerebral oxygenation, especially in the fields of anaesthesiology, neurology, neonatology and cardiac surgery.26 Future multimodality studies will provide the basis for further neurologic, neurosurgical and neuroscientific application.
