Surface reconstruction by multiaxial triangulation

Source: IEEE Computer Graphics & Applications 1994 Nov;14(6):28-35.

Abstract:
Reconstruction of surfaces from scientific data sets-for example, histological sections of brain-can require user interaction to specify surface boundaries as drawn contours. This leads to the problem of reconstruction from outlines: Given a collection of object outlines made from selected image planes in an object, how do you construct a surface consistent with those outlines? Because the surface will normally be nonunique, seeking the best surface also requires some criterion of optimality.
